Is the free tier actually usable, or is it a trap?
Usable, permanently. Every calculator, the full species database, the compatibility engine, the community, and the welfare reminders are free. Two enclosures and 60 days of history. Most keepers get real value without ever paying, and that is the point. You upgrade when you want the platform to remember and think for you, not because the free tier stopped working.
Do I have to keep bioactive setups to use it?
No. Bioactive is the signature, not a requirement. A standard planted tank, a bare-bottom reef, or a paper-towel quarantine reptile setup all work fine. If you do run bioactive, the cleanup crew and culture tools are there and nothing else offers them. If you do not, you still get the full parameter, calculator, and AI stack.
Will it control my heater or doser for me?
No, and that is deliberate. The platform reads your hardware and recommends. It never drives it. Controlling equipment makes a software company responsible for a stuck relay at 3am, and no subscription covers that risk to your animals. You keep control. The platform makes you better at using it.
Is the AI going to give me a confident wrong answer?
It is built specifically not to. Below a confidence threshold, it returns possibilities and the next diagnostic step instead of a conclusion. Species data below a reliability bar is flagged and kept out of recommendations. A confident wrong call on coral necrosis or reptile illness costs an animal, so the system is designed to say "I am not sure, here is how to find out."
